Things to Consider

Dream Homes Are Serious Business…

You’ve always dreamed of owning a home in Mexico, and now it’s finally time to start making that dream come true! It’s all very exciting, and Puerto Morelos is a great spot to choose, but there are still a lot of things to consider to ensure that we can find you the perfect home.

Before browsing listings, reflect on the following questions:

Do I have to be on the beach?

Properties on the beach are wonderful! They are also the most expensive and there are maintenance considerations – for some people, just off the beach is their happy place!

How large does the house have to be for my family to be comfortable?

Consider how you are going to use the home – for a few weeks, a few months, the whole year? Are you likely to spend most of your time outdoors or indoors? A space that is more than comfortable for a few weeks may be claustrophobic at 3 months and a relationship killer at a full year….

How many rooms and bathrooms are required?

Realistically, how many people will be using the home at one time? We all dream of big family gatherings at our beach home, but the reality is that everyone has their own lives, and probably can’t travel at the same time. If it will mostly be the two of you, buy accordingly and if the miracle family gathering happens – rent a few additional homes/condos.

The big question is often “Private Home or Condo”…?

The age old dilemma! Some people swear they could never be “condo people” and then find out it’s exactly what they want — home ownership without the hassle of home/garden maintenance! What you may give up in terms of privacy  is often made up by more affordable ocean views and more time spent relaxing on the beach rather than waiting for the plumber to show up… If your objection is to association fees – in many ways you can consider that a wash. You will have to pay for maintenance and management either way (private home or condo) unless you plan to be here full-time to take care of it all yourself.

There are lots of different condo complexes in and around Puerto Morelos with varying degrees of amenities, varying degrees of private outdoor space, and a range of association fees. And condos are generally more affordable options if you are looking for ocean front or ocean view properties. Plus, condos are great options for generating rental income when you are not using them.

Private homes are also wonderful – but not without their own costs – you will pay a gardener, pool guy, property manager. Lots to consider!

The answers to these questions will help you not only determine the type of home that will be the best for you, but also save you time from viewing houses that don’t meet your personal criteria.
