Full disclosure: We are predisposed to adore the folks at Riviera Rescue because they rescued our girl Toni and then forced us to adopt her. Just kidding — no forcing involved — it was game over when Toni looked at us and perked up her huge ears. And in any event we are so glad — she’s the sweetest dog in the world.
Founded in 2015, Riviera Rescue is one of the largest and most active dog rescues in Puerto Morelos. While they take in rescues all the time, they are best known in the Riviera Maya for being the organization to call with really tough rescue cases. They’ve seen a lot of terrible things. But through their dedication, many dogs that others would have given up on, the dogs that were so severely mistreated that they clung to life, now are not only alive, they are thriving with new families. We will spare you the sad before and after images, but we assure you the work Matteo and his team are doing is extraordinary. Many of the rescue cases they pull off are nothing short of a miracle.
Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever.
Recent Emergency Rescue
Matteo and his team are always quick to act in any rescue situation, and this past weekend is the perfect example. On Saturday night an animal rescuer in Cancun passed away. When help arrived at her property, they found that the situation was much worse than they could have imagined. There were over 100 dogs and 50 cats living in dangerous and unsafe hoarding conditions.
Riviera Rescue took in 20 of those dogs immediately, no questions asked. All 20 dogs are now receiving medical attention — from broken bones, to infected eyes, cancer and skin conditions. It is heartbreaking to learn about the suffering of these animals, but amazing to know that there are people with huge hearts to take them in and care for them on a moment’s notice.
Thanks to the team at Riviera Rescue, all these dogs will receive the care they need and their lives will only get better from today forward.
Help the Helpers
Riviera Rescue is primarily funded by donations and the amazing work they do rehabilitating and rehoming the animals is accomplished through the hard work of unpaid volunteers. But now with 50 dogs in their care, the bills are piling up. Riviera Rescue needs to raise additional funds for the surgeries, medications and food for the dogs they rescued this past weekend.
If you are able to help, it would be wonderful. Every little bit counts. You can make donations to support their incredible work in the following ways:
Stay tuned this week as we share different individuals and charities that are giving back in Puerto Morelos. Please take care and we hope to see you back here soon.
