What’s Up in Puerto Morelos | September 13 – 19, 2019

Date: September 12, 2019

Viva Mexico!

If you’re here in Puerto Morelos this weekend, you are in for a real treat!

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on the night of September 15th and all day on the 16th with festive decorations, delicious traditional foods, lively parades, and boisterous patriotic displays.

A Little History….

Mexico’s War of Independence was initiated by Father Miguel Hidalgo who called out to the people to rise up against Spain in 1810. This event is known as el grito de Dolores. On September 15 at 11 pm el grito is re-enacted in town squares throughout Mexico. If you’re in Mexico you shouldn’t miss this opportunity to be in the center of the action.

In Puerto Morelos, head over to the park in the Colonia for the big celebration Sunday night!  There is a huge stage set up for the show, which will include speeches, live music, dancing and fireworks!

Make sure you wear your red/white/green, because everyone else will be wearing it.  If you don’t have anything, never fear – there will be plenty of vendors selling Mexican themed items to wave or wear.

Also, come hungry, because the food is out of this world!  There are vendors set up all around the park selling anything you can imagine – cotton candy, marquesitas, esquites, tacos, chicharron, micheladas, to name just a few of the goodies!

Watch the clock, because at 11 pm you need to be ready to shout “Viva Mexico!” and enjoy the fireworks!

The celebrations continue all day Monday (many businesses will be closed as it is an official holiday) and some local restaurants are offering a famous traditional dish – chiles en nogada.

According to legend, this Mexican dish was first prepared by nuns in the city of Puebla just after Mexico’s independence was declared.  It consists of poblano chilis filled with picadillo (a mixture usually containing shredded meat, aromatics, fruits and spices) topped with a walnut-based cream sauce, called nogada, and pomegranate seeds, giving it the three colors of the Mexican flag, making it an ideal Independence Day food.

While the city has not announced the details of all the celebrations in Puerto Morelos (stay tuned to Friends of Puerto Morelos – eventually they will post a schedule!), several of the restaurants around town are hosting Independence Day parties this weekend, which you’ll find on the events list below!
