Thinking about visiting Puerto Morelos… or maybe even moving here someday? We get questions about life in this charming little beach town all the time — from travelers, future residents, and curious investors.
So we rounded up five of the most common questions we hear about living and traveling to Puerto Morelos. If you’ve been wondering about what life here is really like, this should help!
Let’s start strong… Is Puerto Morelos safe to live in?
One of the things people love most about Puerto Morelos is its peaceful, small-town vibe. It’s the kind of place where neighbors recognize each other, people walk or bike to the beach, and life moves at a slower pace.
Unlike larger tourist destinations nearby, Puerto Morelos doesn’t have a big nightlife scene filled with mega clubs or franchise bars. Instead, you’ll find cozy restaurants, beach bars, and live music spots — perfect for relaxed evenings.
As with anywhere in the world, it’s always important to use common sense, but overall Puerto Morelos is widely known as a safe, friendly, and welcoming community.
How far is Puerto Morelos from the Cancun Airport?
One of Puerto Morelos’ biggest perks? Location, location, location.
The town is only about 20–25 minutes from Cancun International Airport, making travel incredibly easy whether you’re visiting for a week or flying in and out regularly.
Transportation options include:
- Private transportation services
- Shared airport shuttles
Many visitors prefer to book transportation in advance, especially during busy travel seasons.
Do I need a car to live in Puerto Morelos?
Surprisingly… not really!
Puerto Morelos is very walkable and bike-friendly, especially in the beachside area. But even if you stay or live in La Colonia, a bike or public transportation is more than enough — I promise, it’s no more than a 15-minute ride.
It’s extremely common for residents to get around using bikes, electric bikes, walking, local public transportation, or even taxis. If you’re visiting, there are also plenty of bike rentals around town!
Do I need to use pesos or can I pay in dollars?
Mexico’s official currency is Mexican pesos, so it’s always convenient to have some on hand.
That said, many businesses in Puerto Morelos do accept U.S. dollars. Just keep in mind that the exchange rate offered by shops and restaurants is usually lower than the official bank rate, so paying in pesos is typically the better deal.
Pro tip:
ATMs are easy to find in town, and withdrawing pesos locally is often the simplest option.
Is Puerto Morelos a good place to invest in real estate?
Short answer: many people think so.
Puerto Morelos has become increasingly attractive for buyers looking for a lifestyle investment — somewhere you can enjoy yourself while also owning property in a growing destination.
Here’s why people love it:
Prime location between Cancun and Playa del Carmen
Close to the international airport
Growing demand for vacation rentals and long-term living
Authentic beach-town charm that hasn’t been overdeveloped
For many buyers, Puerto Morelos offers that rare combination of peaceful Caribbean living and strong long-term potential.
