Living in Paradise Means Being Prepared

June 28, 2026

One of the many reasons we love Puerto Morelos is the incredible lifestyle—beautiful beaches, warm weather, and a close-knit community. Like any coastal destination, hurricane season is simply part of life here.

The good news? Preparing your home doesn’t have to be stressful. A few simple steps each year can help protect your property, give you peace of mind, and make the season much easier for you and your family.

When Is Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with the highest activity typically occurring between August and October.

Not every storm affects Puerto Morelos, but it’s always a good idea to be prepared before one is in the forecast—not after.

Secure Your Home

If local authorities or Protección Civil issue an alert, take a few minutes to secure your property.

Bring in patio furniture, potted plants, grills, bicycles, and any loose outdoor decorations. These items can become hazardous during strong winds.

It’s also a great time to check your windows, doors, gutters, and roof to make sure everything is in good condition.

Build Your Emergency Kit

One of the best things you can do is prepare your emergency kit before a storm is approaching.

Keep drinking water, canned and non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, battery-powered fans, your medications (plus a little extra if you take them daily), and fully charged power banks ready.

Preparing early helps you avoid the last-minute rush and unnecessary panic buying.

Protect Your Important Documents

Take a few minutes to gather your important documents and keep them somewhere safe and easy to access.

We recommend having copies of:

  • Passports and IDs
  • Property documents
  • Insurance policies
  • Emergency contact information

Digital backups stored securely in the cloud are always a good idea, too.

If You Own a Vacation Rental

If you rent out your property, communication is just as important as preparation.

Make sure your guests know who to contact, where to find emergency information, and what to expect if a storm is approaching. A trusted local property manager can make the entire process much smoother for everyone involved.

A Little Preparation Goes a Long Way

Hurricane season is simply part of living in the Caribbean. Most seasons pass without major impacts, and taking a few simple precautions each year helps you enjoy everything Puerto Morelos has to offer with greater peace of mind.
