Puerto Morelos Life

The Businesses That Give Puerto Morelos Its Personality

October 3, 2026

Puerto Morelos is made up of more than a beach, a lighthouse, and a beautiful little town square.

It’s the places where you become a regular. The café where they start remembering your order. The taco stand you swear is better than every other taco stand. The gym where you keep running into the same people. The restaurant you take friends to when they visit because you want them to experience your Puerto Morelos, not just the one they saw online.

One of the things we love about living and working in Puerto Morelos is getting to know those places.

And because our town has two very different sides — the seaside Puerto and La Colonia — we thought we’d take you on a little local tour.

SEA SIDE VILLAGE — THE PUERTO SIDE

Start your morning near the water and you have plenty of excuses to stay out all day.

For breakfast, Mangata, El Nicho, Local Cafe, Lola y Moya, and Muelle Once are some of the places we’d happily start a slow Puerto Morelos morning. El Nicho, right around Tulum and Rojo Gómez, is especially nice when you’re looking for a relaxed breakfast or brunch with plenty of time to linger.

Then there’s the very important question: what are we having for lunch?

On the Puerto side, Muelle Once, El Merkadito, Península, El Campanario, Blue Morelos, Chimichurri, Spaghettino, and Dai give you a pretty good reason not to cook.

You can go from seafood and a table near the water to pasta, sushi, steaks, or a long lunch that somehow turns into an afternoon. Al Chimichurri, for example, has been part of Puerto Morelos since 2007 and brings its Uruguayan-style grill to the heart of town.

And when the sun goes down, Puerto Morelos doesn’t exactly go to sleep.

La Sirena is one of those places that feels like a quintessential Puerto Morelos night — dinner, drinks, ocean views, and live music. Their rooftop looks over the Caribbean, and live music is part of the experience throughout the week.

For something a little more tucked-away, there’s El Refugio. And if you’re in the mood for dinner with a view, Portsidepm sits right by the sea, bringing international cuisine and a rooftop atmosphere into the mix.

Basically, you came out for “one drink” and now it’s 10:30 PM.

It happens.

LA COLONIA — A DIFFERENT SIDE OF PUERTO MORELOS

Cross the highway and the rhythm changes.

La Colonia has a more everyday, local feel — the kind of place where you’re just as likely to run into someone you know at breakfast as you are to discover your new favorite hole-in-the-wall.

And yes, we need to talk about tacos.

For breakfast, you can start with Sabor a Puerto, Mala Madre, Tacos de Carnitas de la Gas, Tacos de La Carpa Rosa (Close to Costamed), Tacos Ely, Tlacoyo Azul, or Casa Mono.

And if you’re thinking, Wait, tacos for breakfast?

Of course.

In Puerto Morelos, tacos can take you from breakfast to lunch to dinner without anyone questioning your life choices.

Tlacoyo Azul, over on Calle Tortuga, is another fun stop when you’re craving something rooted in Mexican flavors, with tlacoyos, pulque, and other traditional dishes on the menu.

For lunch, you could easily stay in La Colonia all day.

Sabor a Puerto is a local favorite, while El Poblano, La Cabaña, Pecao, and El Diez give you plenty of options depending on what you’re craving.

And then there’s dinner.

Maybe it’s El Diez for pizza and pasta, El Tulipán for something different, or maybe dinner is simply an esquite or a marquesita from the park.

Because sometimes the best evening doesn’t require a reservation.

Sometimes it looks like sitting around the park with something sweet, watching people walk by, and realizing that you haven’t checked your phone in an hour.

THE VERY IMPORTANT DESSERT & COFFEE DEPARTMENT

We can’t talk about Puerto Morelos without talking about the little stops between meals.

For ice cream, there’s Panna e Cioccolato or La Michoacana.

For coffee and something sweet, Dopamina and Dragon Fly are the kind of places you can stop for “just a coffee” and somehow end up staying much longer than planned.

And if what you really want is a beautiful little piece of bread to go with your morning coffee, ATELIER is worth knowing about.

Because in Puerto Morelos, coffee is rarely just coffee.

MOVE YOUR BODY, PUERTO MORELOS STYLE

One of the best things about living here is that staying active doesn’t have to mean spending your entire day inside a gym.

You can start your morning with yoga through Portal Colibrí, including their community classes at the deportivo. Their current schedule has included morning sessions around 9:30 AM, so you can get your movement in before the heat really settles in.

If cycling is more your thing, Glow Studio is one of the newer additions to Puerto Morelos’ fitness scene.

For Pilates, Resilience Pilates with Silvia Vallejo has become a local go-to for reformer classes. The studio is in Villas Morelos II, and classes are focused on controlled movement, strength, and form.

And for the classic gym crowd, you’ve got options like California Gym and Espartanos.

Prefer something a little more social?

Head to the deportivo for pickleball.

That’s another thing about Puerto Morelos: you can build a surprisingly active lifestyle here without having to leave town.

AND THEN THERE’S THE FUN PART

Maybe this is what makes Puerto Morelos feel like a community rather than simply a place on a map.

It’s the fact that your plans don’t always need to be complicated.

You might meet friends for dinner at La Sirena and stay for live music. You might grab a coffee in La Colonia, walk around the park, and end up with a marquesita. You might go to yoga in the morning, play pickleball later, and finish the day watching the sunset.

Or you might do absolutely none of that.

You might just walk down the street, run into three people you know, stop for tacos, and call it a very successful Tuesday.

That’s Puerto Morelos.

The businesses here aren’t just places to eat, drink, work out, or spend an evening.

They’re part of the rhythm of the town.

They’re where people meet, where friendships happen, where visitors become regulars, and where residents create little routines that make a place feel like home.

And that’s the part of Puerto Morelos we love sharing most.

Not just where to go — but the places that make you feel like you belong here.

Have a local favorite we missed? Tell us about it! We’re always looking for another excuse to explore our town.
