One of the many reasons we love Puerto Morelos… CENOTES!

When most of us think of Puerto Morelos, the first thing that comes to mind is the beach! Yes, the beach is AMAZING, but there is so much more to explore in this area- the Mayan jungle, the ruins, the cenotes!

If you are looking for a fun day trip, we highly recommend checking out La Ruta de Los Cenotes- a 42 kilometer stretch of road from Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario. It’s scattered with ecotourism locations that are sure to impress.

And, like the name suggests, this road is loaded with cenotes! Every few kilometers you can find an entrance to a property that features these natural phenomena. The cool, fresh water of these jungle oases are sure to provide a refreshing dip!

But wait, what’s a cenote?! It is a natural sinkhole and in this region it serves as an entryway to the LARGEST underwater river system in the world. There are a few different types of Cenotes: opened, semi-opened, and closed. Many feature a big enough pool of water for you to swim, snorkel, and (if you’re brave and skilled enough) SCUBA dive!

So which are our favorites?!

Like we mentioned above, they are EVERYWHERE. And they aren’t just confined to La Ruta de los Cenotes… But this road is hot spot and so close to home, so we are just focusing on the cenotes on this stretch. So here’s our list (in no particular order…)!

#1 Kin-Ha

Kin-Ha is a great place to go and spend the entire day. Not only do they offer different types of cenotes, you can also opt to do various activities such as ATV’s, horseback riding, and ziplines. You can view their webpage HERE.

#2. CENOTE LA NORIA

Similar to Kin-Ha, Cenote La Noria has a little bit of everything to offer- ATV’s, ziplining, and horses! And an amazing cenote that is great for snorkeling. The park offers multiple packages starting from $200pesos. Check out their Facebook page HERE.

#3. Zapote

This is a GREAT option if you are looking to explore different types of cenotes. This property includes 4 in total- 2 open cenotes and 2 caverns. You can just visit the cenotes or for an additional charge participate in the other activities they offer!

#4. Boca Del Puma

Boca Del Puma is another cenote park that offers all of the activities and amenities (zipling, snorkeling, atv’s, food, etc.) but something unique to this park is that they also offer camping- Spend the day and even stay the night!

#5. SIETE BOCAS

Siete Bocas (7 Mouths in English) is an interesting property that offers 7 different entrances to a complex waterway. In many cases you can snorkel from one opening to the next! If you are looking to visit a cenote and avoid the other activities, Siete Bocas is a GREAT place to spend the day.

How to explore La Ruta de Los Cenotes

Ok, so now you know where to go, but question is how to get there!?

There are a few different options for exploring La Ruta de Los Cenotes…

• Take the colectivo! At around $50 pesos a trip, this is the cheapest way to get out to the cenotes. The colectivos are small vans used for public transportation and there is one route that goes from Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario (which covers all of the Ruta de los Cenotes). If you choose this route be sure to know where you are going and be prepared to walk! The van will leave you on the side of the road and typically the cenotes are located a mile (OR MORE) into the jungle.
• Hire a taxi for the day! Another option is to hire a taxi for the day. The driver can make multiple stops, allowing you to view different cenotes. This is a great way to explore the area, especially if the driver has been in Puerto Morelos for a while- they will for sure have some local tips and recommendations to make your day memorable!
• Rent a car! This is one of the most convenient ways. Spend as much time and make as many stops as you’d like!
• Go through a tour company! This is by far the easiest way. Head to your favorite tour company and book a cenote tour! They are typically all-inclusive- food, drinks, and transportation from Puerto Morelos.
